Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth and the Domestic Life

Hi everyone! Again posting about Greek Gods.

I know that the last 2 posts were about Greek Goddess, I hope you liked because I will post about another Greek Goddess! Everyone knows that there are some rules in our home and how do we have to behave in our house and all that stuff. I know what you are thinking and it’s true. THERE IS A GREEK GODDESS ABOUT DOMESTIC LIFE. Yeah, you are probably wondering how do I get this information, but the thing is that I investigate about the Greek Gods and choose an interesting God that maybe some of you don’t know.

Okay, the name of this Goddess is Hestia. Maybe you heard of her but you didn’t actually know what she represents. Here are some of her qualities that I found.

“Hestia is the virgin goddess of the hearth, architecture, and of the right ordering of domesticity and the family. She received the first offering at every sacrifice in the household. All families were pouring sweet wine in her name and dedicated her richest portion. “(Greek-gods.info, 2011)

This is really interesting. I also found that she is the oldest daughter of Cronus and Rhea and she is the eldest sister of all their kids. Another interesting fact about her is that she is 1 of the 3 Goddess virgins; the other two are Athena and Hera. Also, Both Poseidon and Apollo wanted to marry her, but she told them “no” because she promised to Zeus that she would not get married and remain pure forever.

Demeter, Harvest's Goddess

Hi everyone! Happy Halloween and we are almost in December and also holidays! Know that we are in November; it’s almost time of Thanksgiving Day so we can spend the time with our family and eat a delicious meal. But, before we do that, I’m going to talk about a Greek Goddess, Demeter. I read about her and she is a Greek Goddess of the harvest! I didn’t know that there are so many kinds of Gods that has different characteristics and everyone is related with something of our common lives. So, here is an explanation about her “Demeter is The Greek earth goddess who brings forth the fruits of the earth, particularly the various grains. She taught mankind the art of sowing and ploughing so they could end their nomadic existence. As such, Demeter was also the goddess of planned society. She was very popular with the rural population. In ancient art, Demeter was often portrayed (sitting) as a solemn woman, often wearing a wreath of braided ears of corn.” (Lindemans, 1997) So people, here is all about her and what she represents. I think she is one of the most important goddess of Greek because of what she represents and what she taught to humanity. I also read that she is daughter of Cronus and Rhea, which means that she is Zeus’s and Poseidon’s sister Well, I hope you liked this information and continue to check this blog about the god and goddess of Greece. Athena. The Wisdom Goddess

Hi everybody! I just found interesting information about a Greek Goddess. Her name is Athena. Some of you might hear about a city in Greece called Athena, which I think that years ago there was a World Cup. Also, she is a Goddess. I know that in the ancient Greece, Athena was the god of wisdom. But I didn’t know anything about what I’m about to tell you. Here is quick information about her and what she represents or the symbols that represents her. “Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill. She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head. Her mother was Metis, goddess of wisdom and Zeus' first wife. Athena's companion was the goddess of victory, Nike, and her usual attribute is the owl.” (Tuccinardi, 1997) So, as the information says, she is the goddess of wisdom, war, justice. I think that a there is a series based in her, but I don’t really know the name of it. I think that an interesting fact about her is that she grown out of her father’s head (Zeus). I think is quite wear about it, but she might got all the thought of Zeus and the thinks that he knows about the world. So guys, this is all the information that you need to know about Athena, the goddess of wisdom. I’ll post information in some other time!

Hera

Hi guys! I hope you’re doing fine this week and this is the post of today. Hera. A lot of people don’t know her because we obviously know her husband, Zeus! Yeah, I know a little from her but it doesn’t mean I do know all of her. The first thing you have to know is that she is the queen of marriage and childbirth. We’ve been seen a lot of gods but there is no one like her. Here is an interesting fact, she is daughter of Cronus and Rhea and Zeus too. Therefore, SHE IS WIFE AND SISTER OF ZEUS! I mean, it’s quite interesting that the two of them married between each other. Now, here is short information about her. “Hera is Zeus wife and sister. She was raised by the Titans Ocean and Tethys. Shea is the supreme goddess, goddess of marriage and childbirth and takes special care of married women. She was usually depicted as a beautiful women wearing a crown and veil and holding a royal, lotus-tipped staff." (greekmythology.com,2011) So guys, this is all you need to know about Hera. Dionysus

Hey people! Here Alan who I will talk about Dionysus. You probably don’t know who he is. But, As I Investigated, he’s a Greek God that he’s based on wine and ecstasies. So, it’s pretty interesting that there is actually a Greek God about wine, alcohol and drugs. I should tell you guys, that I laugh really hard when I found this article, so in every country there’s something related with this kind of things, like alcohol and drugs. So here is the main information about him. “He was the god of fertility and wine, later considered a patron of the arts. He invented wine and spread the art of tending grapes. He has a dual nature. On one hand bringing joy and divine ecstasy; on the other brutal, unthinking, rage. Thus, reflecting both sides of wines nature. If his choses Dionysus can drive a man mad. No normal fetters can hold him or his followers. Dionysus is the son of Zeus and Semele. He is the only god to have a mortal parent. Dionysus is represented by city religions as the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and thus symbolizes everything which is chaotic, dangerous and unexpected, everything which escapes human reason and which can only be attributed to the unforeseeable action of the gods.” (greekmythology.com, 2011) So guys, this is everything you have to know about Dionysus. Apollo

Hi guys! I’m sorry about not uploading this Thursday. I’ve got so many things to do during the weekend, so I hadn’t the opportunity to post this weekend so that’s why I’m doing it now. I’m looking through the Internet and I found a Greek God so interesting. He is Apollo. It says that Apollo is the God of music and he is associated with light. I didn’t know that Apollo was a God; I just knew that there is a satellite that it’s called that way. In deep research, according to ancienhistory.about.com, “Apollo is a many-talented Greek god of prophecy, music, intellectual pursuits, healing, plague, and sometimes, the sun. Writers often contrast the cerebral, beardless young Apollo with his half-brother, the hedonistic Dionysus, god of wine. Leto (Latona) and Zeus (Jupiter) are the parents of the versatile god Apollo and his twin sister Artemis (Diana), the virgin hunter. He is depicted as a beardless young man. His attributes are the tripod, omphalos, lyre, bow and arrows, laurel, hawk, raven or crow, swan, fawn, roe, snake, mouse, grasshopper, and griffin.” (ancienthistory.about.com) So guys, if you didn’t know anything about Apollo, the Greek god, this information may be useful to you. Achilles

This time, I will talk about Achilles. I don’t know a lot of this character, but in some countries, it refers Achilles as a part of the body, which is the Achilles heel. There is something that some people told me about him, that his only weakness was his ankle. So, here is some information about him. “Achilles was a half-divine hero, being the son of the sea nymph Thetis and king Peleus of Thessaly.

He was educated by the wise centaur Cheiron and was described as extremely handsome but also very emotional. He was almost immortal since his mother had dipped him into the river Styx as a baby. Holding the child by its heel when putting it in the water, Thetis made Achilles' whole body except the heel immortal. He had a son, Neoptolemus, with the Skyrian princess Deidameia, who met her when he was hidden in the Palace of the king Likomidis on the island on Skyros. “When the war against Troy was ignited by the kidnapping of Helen, Thetis learnt by an oracle that her son would not come back alive if he joined Agamemnon. The oracle had said that he would either die young and glorious, or reach old age in obscurity.”(in2greece, 2011).

I didn’t know a lot of this information, but is good to be informed all the time. Being mortal and becoming a god, it has to be interesting. There are other characters like him, for example Hercules, who was mortal and became a god, but I’ll post something about him other time.

Poseidon, God of Sea.

Welcome again to this blog in which we talk about Greek’s myth. I’ve been talking about Cronus, the father of Zeus, hades, Poseidon and many other gods, and also Zeus, who is the actual god in charge of everything. Now, in this post, I will talk about Poseidon. Brief information, Poseidon is the god of the sea, and is characterize by his trident.

Poseidon is the god of sea and water generally. He was the son of Cronus and Rhea, so he was one of the children who Cronus ate. He is also brother of Zeus, the actual chief god and Hades, god of the underworld. “When the three brothers deposed their father, the kingdom of the sea fell by lot to Poseidon.”(EncyclopediaBritannica2011). His best weapon was the trident. It can also be represented as a “long handled fish spear”. (EncyclopediaBritannica2011)

“Poseidon was also the god of earthquake, and many of his oldest places of worship in Greece were inland” (EncyclopediaBritannica2011). This information may imply that Poseidon has powers that affect the earth and the earthquakes that it may be instead tsunamis.

“He was, in addition, closely associated with horses. He was the father of the winged horse Pegasus by the winged monster Medusa. Most scholars agree that Poseidon was brought to Greece as the god of the earliest Hellenes, who also introduced the first horses to the country." (Encyclopedia Britannica2011)

It seems that Poseidon also has a greedy personality, according to Skyler Raine in his online article, which he said, "Poseidon is depicted as one greedy, vengeful deity who used his powers to inflict damage on his enemies."(Raine2009).

Well, this information expresses basic information about Poseidon, also a curios fact about him.

I think that Poseidon is a terrific god and a very good representation of a good brother. There is a movie that talks about this kind of information, for example, the Greek gods, the Olympus and demigods. This movie is called “Percy Jackson and the lighting thief”, I watched it movie 3 times and I suggest you to watch this movie.

I’ll post next week information of a god, maybe Hades, brother of Zeus and Poseidon.

Zeus, The god of Thunder

Zeus the youngest son of Cronus and Rhea, he was the supreme ruler of Mount Olympus and of the Pantheon of gods who resided there. Being the supreme ruler upheld law, justice and morals, and this made him the spiritual leader of both gods and men. Zeus was a celestial god, and originally worshiped as a weather god by the Greek tribe. He has always been associated as being the god of thunder, as his main attribute is the thunderbolt; he controlled thunder, lightning and rain.

This is the story of how Zeus and his brothers and sisters pull down they’re ruler and father, Cronus.

Cronus had already defeated his own father Uranus and castrated him to become the mighty ruler. With Rhea, he fathered Hestia, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera and Zeus. Cronus was fearful that his children would in turn other throw him, so as they born he ate them whole.

By the time Zeus was due to be born, Rhea was rather fed up with this behavior. She went to Crete to give birth and passed him to Gaia, her mother, who hid him in a cave. Then she wrapped up a great stone in infants covering and gave this to Cronus to eat, pretending it to be Zeus.

When Zeus had grown to maturity, Cronus was tricked into bringing up all that he had swallowed: first the stone and then his other children. With his brothers and sisters, Zeus waged against Cronus. A great war raged for over ten years but finally Zeus was triumphant.

Hi. I will start introducing about what I will talk about and that is Mythology. So far I know Mythology talks about myths of some god’s cultures, for example, Greek Gods. So, in this first post, I will talk about what are mythology and some Greek gods, in which I will refer during this period of time.

In Greece, mythology the body of tradicional tales concerning the gods , heroes, and rituals of the ancient Greek. The principal God is Cronus, who is known as the father of the principal gods we know, for example, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, etc. He was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of Titans, divine descendants of Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky. He overthrew his father and ruled during the mythological Golden Age, until he was overthrown by his own sons, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and imprisioned in Tartarus.
